Tainan is a strange city, it doesn't show you all that it has to offer easily. The main attractions are easy to find, however, the things that make it really interesting only appeared to me after a certain amount of time or when I had changed my perspective. For example, I recently bought a bicycle, and cycling around Tainan has allowed me to see things at a slower pace, so, I have discovered quite a few pockets of history tucked away in alleys. However, if I were riding my scooter, I would have probably not noticed these places as my vision would have needed to be fully aware of incoming 'blue trucks of death'.
So, what's all this got to do with a dolphin. Well, this is one Tainan's unknown secrets. It's the only one of its kind in Taiwan, a dolphin rescue centre. It's on the outskirts of the city, about a 15min drive away, yet, nobody knows about this place, not even most of the Taiwanese.
This dolphin is a 'Rough-toothed dolphin' which beached itself just north of Tainan. It's the 9th dolphin to have been rescued. When I asked about what had happened to the previous eight dolphins I was told they all had died. (At this point I had to look away and laugh, not good statistics for a rescue centre). However, I think Taiwan is new to this field of conservation, so the fact that it trying to help is a step in the right direction.
The centre were looking for people to help out with some of the manual work, so scrubbing the tanks clean was worth the effort just to get within touching distance of the dolphin. This was my first time to have ever seen a dolphin, so to see one in such close proximity was just fantastic. Getting to feed it fish was and added bonus!
