As I have not seen much of Taiwan since I have been here, these past few weeks a couple of friends and I have been making an effort to get out of Tainan more often on the weekends. Our previous efforts have always seem to lead us to Kaohsiung, or to be more precise, The Lighthouse bar. However, this time we managed to make it further than Kaohsiung, making it all the way to the south of Taiwan, Kenting (Kending).
Kenting is one of Taiwans' most famous tourist spot, just about every Taiwanese person I know has been there. Kenting is a National Park consisting of mountainous countryside and great beaches. The main beaches near Kenting town are often crowded, but the further afield you get, the cleaner and quieter they become.
The first day there I rented a bicycle and headed eastwards, which to my displeasure seemed to be mostly uphill. I should have turned back after the first few hills, however, I kept telling myself that I would eventually have to go downhill. Well, I didn't, and after three or so hours of riding a bike in temperatures of over 30 degrees and the humidity over 90%, I gave in and turned back. I have to admit that when you ride a scooter, you always get a breeze and take for granted just how good that feels. But, when are on a bike, tired, hot and dripping in sweat from head to toe, you really learn to appreciate just how great a breeze feels going downhill.
The next day, I did the sensible thing of returning the bike and renting a scooter. Sod appreciating the breeze the hard way!
On the scooter, I rode under a blue sky and along green fields and trees (a rarety in the cities) and headed for Baisha beach. There, I spent the day lying in the sun, swimming in blue blue water and watching various people going in and out the water fully clothed holding umbrellas. At one point, I think I was even witness to a soft porn photo shot. A bunch of muscly taiwanese guys were taking photos of eachother sunbathing, running baywatch style across the sand and the funniest of all, crawling out of the sea with waves crashing upon them. And I thought you could not top holding umbrellas in the sea!
Kenting town attracts the crowds on the weekend
The countryside in Kenting park
Land's end; Taiwan's most southerly point. Just stumbled across it.
The beaches around Kenting; some are preserved for the wildlife, whilst others are solely for the tourists.
Baisha Wan was by far my favorite, far from the town, hardly any crowds and clear blue water.
The beaches near Kenting town stay busy throughout the night.
Some of the sea life you can find on Kenting's shores.
And some of the sea food you can buy in the shops
